Our Story

We are the Johnson family

Johnson family at Performance Auto Care

We are the Johnson family…a typical middle class American family that just happens to love cars, trucks, four wheelers, lawnmowers, airplanes, bicycles, and anything else that may have wheels. This passion began as a childhood hobby for Tim. With his interest and genuine talent, it led him down a career path of aircraft and auto maintenance for the past 30 years. Cars, trucks (specifically International Scouts), and having a driveway full of vehicles in various stages of repair with the tools to work on them have always been just a part of life in the Johnson household.

Matchbox cars, Tonka trucks, and Legos were at the top of the list of favorite toys for the Johnson children. Jacob and Tiffany spent many hours building Lego creations with some closely resembling some form of transportation. They also created book “roads” for the Matchbox cars to drive on throughout the house. At the early age of three, Jacob began on-the-job training to memorize all of the different parts under the hood. With homemade flashcards, he and Dad (Tim) would have a nightly training session learning the various parts of an engine. At age four, Jacob inherited his first set of real tools and could capably use them. Our first indication that he was adept with a ratchet was when he skillfully disassembled our recliner. Mom (Mary) insisted that it was time to move on to a real project! While Tim worked on cars in the driveway, Jacob worked on his very own lawnmower. Over the years, father and son have spent many hours in driveways and garages working together on countless projects.

This consistent mentoring combined with natural ability and interest opened many doors of opportunity for Jacob. His automotive repair skills were not only an appreciated financial resource through college, but also a valuable asset since graduating to support a family—his wife, Emily and their baby daughter, Macy—and to fund his own rebuild projects, currently an International Scout.

Being a typical middle class American family, someone has to get up every day and go to work to earn a living. After years of working for someone else and having retirement benefits, Tim and Mary began pursuing the idea of launching into a new business venture. After researching and pursuing a few different ideas, however, the notion was put on a temporary hold.

About this same time, the Johnson children began taking some steps toward their future paths. Tiffany launched out into a career as a Flight Attendant and is now fulfilling her lifelong dream of traveling. Jacob and Emily began contemplating their long-term goals and where they would like to be in 5-10 years. With those things in mind, they determined some necessary steps that would need to be taken to reach those objectives. For Jacob to continue working for someone else was one option, however, it would not allow him and his family to achieve the goals before them. Because he was already supporting his family in a field that he loved as an auto mechanic, it seemed natural for him to continue in that line of work. It also seemed natural to team up with the one person that had originally cultivated his interest in cars as a child.

This thought led to many long family discussions on the possibility of teaming up together to open an auto repair shop. Equipped with the tools and experience to get started as well as the long-time working relationship as a family, it seemed to be a perfect fit for everyone. It would allow everyone to reach their goals and to go to work every day to earn a living doing something that they loved.

Well, that is our story…we hope that it will go on for many years to come and end happily ever after!
